Imagine stumbling across a mysterious bonfire in a clearing at the edge of an abandoned garden. Woodsmoke fills the crisp autumn air and you shiver, holding your thermos tightly. The flames create flickering silhouettes of a gnarled tree at the center of the garden, casting eerie shadows across the tangled grounds. You kneel next to a wild pumpkin hidden in the vines and take a sip from your thermos. The toasted spices in your drink bite a little and linger on your tongue, bringing warmth into your body.

Out of the corner of your eye, you suddenly notice the murky outline of a feline figure several yards away. Its luminous eyes watch your every move as it contemplates approaching. As you turn to face the cat, it begins picking its way across shriveled plants and pokey brambles to sit within arm's reach. For a split second, a trick of the light makes you think the cat is wearing a crooked hat, but the image quickly passes. You feel compelled to respond to the cat, but as your mouth opens to speak you fall through the earth and...

...wake up in your own bed, sheets tangled around your legs. You roll over to find your cat perched next to your pillow, staring intently at you. This is how your day begins: alongside a familiar, special creature with whom you share your home, feelings, and life force. This is your Witch's Familiar.

I love fall and Halloween. I always look forward to the changing of the leaves and the arrival of the only time of year when it is acceptable to wear costumes and knock on strangers' doors asking for treats (or tricks). For my first seasonal/limited time candle, I wanted to create something mysterious and unique, but that still featured the tried and true classic of pumpkin.
